Apr 12, 2021

We are happy to share that last Saturday the conductor of AGBU Sofia Chamber Orchestra, Maestro Levon Manukyan, joined the literature class of the Bulgarian school "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" in Paris. The theme for which topic Maestro Manukyan spoke was about the Armenian culture, spirit and traditions. This connection was possible with the cooperation of  Mrs. Sonia Avakian - Bedrossian, Honorary Chairperson of AGBU Sofia.

You will read more in the article below!

In our literature class last Saturday was the Bulgarian conductor of Armenian origin Levon Manukyan Conductor. With a lot of desire and enthusiasm he shared his impressions with students and parents from his recent visit of Armenia and especially his thoughts and feelings as the heir to a heroic nation that went through mass massacres in the late 19th century and the brutal genocide of 1915.

Levon is a young man, sacredly preserving the ancestral historical memory with reverence and with a message to the people to never allow such suffering for any nation again and anywhere in the world.

"... the vision of ethnic otherness in" Armenians "is connected with the themes of memory, for the radical other, for suffering and survival, for eternity ... ” .

"... Even with the title" Armenians "highlights otherness, notices it, communicates it, imposes it ...".

It seems we had a agreed for this in advance with Levon! If we had rehearsed it many times, would not have been obtained such a clear and exciting interpretation of Yavorov's verse, of his universal message, which went beyond the framework of exactness.

He was telling and the teacher was supporting what was said with the exact quote from the poem, he shared with us the ethnic features of the Armenians and again the exact quote on the right place... suffering - rebellious, and disobedience, soaked within the song, the strength and powerlessness of the exiles, the desire to forget and at the same time the impossibility of doing so. Past and present intertwined in the story of our guest, and the poem "responded" probative.

Such class of literature, but a class of knowledge of the other, class of discovery of so many different facts - historically less, but very modern and interesting.

And since it was May 16, we couldn't to mention two important dates in our literature and history - May 15, 1925, when 95 years ago Public safety authorities took Geo Milev, for whom Yavorov was the second national poet after Botiyova. They take Geo Milev for a small reference, from which he never returned and was found years later among many killed without trial or sentence.

And again, on May 15, but in 1892, Stoyan Mihaylovski wrote the poem “Hymn of St. St. Cyril and Methodius", which today with the wonderful and unforgettable melody of Panayot Pipkov is a universal school anthem. This song in just a week will sound again all over Bulgaria and in all spots of the world where are Bulgarians!

Levon Manukyan is the initiator of a video for a mass performance of the anthem of Cyril and Methodius, in which we also participate on the occasion of our patron Saint's day. Again, Levon offered to "work out" with his team and something special for our school, in which we became actively involved, but let remain this surprise for the holiday. In expectation of the bright day in our ears already sounds: "Go, revived people ...", "... Forward science is the sun ..."

Heartfelt thanks to Levon, Camelia, Beatrice, Daniela, Velina for the wonderful two hours together!

We also thank Mrs. Sonya Avakian-Bedrossian - Honorary Chairperson of AGBU Sofia, for the cooperation!
